Product Description
Product Description
Helen’s Asian Kitchen Suribachi Set, a traditional Japanese ceramic mortar with wooden pestle, quickly grinds ingredients into a fine paste or powder for preparing authentic Asian dressings, sauces, and pastes. Introduced from Southern China in the 11th century, this beautiful kitchen essential, the Japanese mortar (suribachi) and wooden pestle (surikogi) became an important tool in the Japanese kitchen. Its literal translation, grinding bowl, describes its results perfectly. The unglazed interior with sharp ridges speeds up the grinding process and prevents ingredients from slipping and sliding for more efficient results with minimal effort. Perfect for crushing sesame seeds and all types of nuts, garlic, herbs, and seasonings. Made from natural ceramic earthenware with a rich brown glazed exterior, Helen Chen’s Suribachi mortar set is sturdy and durable. The traditional wooden pestle is specially designed to prevent unnecessary wear to the mortar’s interior ridges. Easy to use. Simply set the suribachi on a damp towel or rubber mat to steady it on the work surface. Place ingredients inside and use the wooden pestle to rotate contents against the sharp, raised ridges inside the suribachi. Use a soft-bristle brush to dislodge ground ingredients. Hand wash in hot water, no soap. Brought to you by HIC Harold Import Co. Not affiliated with Joyce Chen Products.

A Japanese version of the mortar and pestle, this suribachi set from Helen's Asian Kitchen is ideally suited to grinding and crushing herbs, seeds, and spices for deliciously fresh food. Crafted from durable earthenware with a rich brown outer glaze, the suribachi bowl features an unglazed, ribbed interior. This design holds ingredients at a slope for efficient, visible grinding. The coordinating wooden pestle, or surikogi, works well with the ceramic materials, so that the ingredients, not the bowl, take the beating. Comfortable in the hand, the pestle is shaped to maximize the contours of the suribachi bowl for uniform and quick results. All pieces should be washed by hand to preserve their integrity. --Emily Bedard

Original review: I will admit that I had this suribachi set in my cart for quite some time before going for the purchase. Given the more than reasonable price and my immediate need for a mortar & pestle set, I went ahead and ordered last month. Am I ever glad that I did!
My suribachi set arrived quickly, as is always the case when ordering from Amazon. It was packaged more than adequately and everything in the box was intact, and all of the pieces were present: bowl, wooden pestle and bamboo brush. Okay, I put the bamboo brush away in my utensil drawer thinking that such a small and insignificant item would never be used, but don't underestimate this little wonder of a helper.
First thing that I ground were some green peppercorns that had been packed in brine. It performed beautifully, but because the peppercorns were green, they were stuck all in the ridges of the bowl. That's when I remembered the bamboo brush, but I didn't see how it was going to help. Was I ever wrong! The brush got every bit of the peppercorns out of the ridges with no trouble at all.
Overall, I am beyond pleased with this suribachi set and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. Enjoy!
One complaint I might offer, which may contradict the praise I just gave about its size, is that the small size does allow certain spices to fly out (a specific mustard seed incident comes to mind). I think this could be prevented by starting with a small amount and gradually adding more, so it's not too many seeds at once. But this is one place where I think a larger mortar or an electric grinder may be better.
I am also not a huge fan of the wooden pestle. As with a lot of wooden implements, flavors and aromas can kind of hang onto the grain, and this is especially true when we're talking strong flavors and aromas such as spices. It's not a major problem, and I haven't noticed that it imparts unwanted flavors to the next batch of spices or anything like that.
All in all, it's good for what it is. In hindsight, I would probably just skip it and get an electric grinder, but this works if you are into the fun of grinding by hand.
I do own a Dirty Bird 1.5 scuttle that I use 90% of the time but was looking for something that I could take on the road with me. While searching the stores in San Jose came across a Suribachi bowl. The size was perfect and the ridges would enhance the lather just like my scuttle so decided to give it a try and not disappointed with my purchase. Works great with working up a lather and my initial thoughts of the rough ridges fraying my quality badgers and horse hair brushes have been unfounded so far.
This one is actually my second bowl as I had the misfortune of dropping my original bowl while on a vacation trip and couldn't do without, so with the advantage of having a Prime account, I had this second bowl delivered to my hotel and in my hand within two days.
Well worth the money I paid and will always have one of these in my DE\SE shaving collection.
